Strawberry Roti (Flavoured Flatbread)

When you hear strawberry roti, what do you think? I’m guessing you either think I’m crazy, or brilliant. Let me help you out, this is definitely one of my most brilliant ideas, (right up their with blueberry idlis.)

What I find is that the flavour in these rotis is quite subtle, it’s not really in your face how you might expect it to be. So my favourite way to serve this roti is with butter or makhan, boondi raita, or some mint chutney. Also, if you are looking for a stronger colour to impress the kiddos, blueberry rotis get a much deeper hue.

Just like my vegetable rotis, these strawberry rotis are relatively easy to make, taste delicious, and pack a powerful nutritional punch. The best part, kids love them! It’s such a novelty for little ones, one of their favourite fruits, served up as a roti.

I’ve been making my kids flavoured rotis for years. In fact, it’s one of my favourite ways to clean out the fridge. I’ll blend up whatever veggies or fruits are going off and turn them into rotis that we slather with butter or cream cheese and eat as rolls. It’s really no different than when my mom used to turn extra dal into dal roti, or when we make sabji parantha with leftovers. We just aren’t used to the concept of strawberry roti so it feels strange.

A lot of people tell me that their kids don’t like eating desi food. I find that is because we are trying to force them to eat foods with flavours that don’t recognize. Try blending a flavour they love with a safe food like roti. I’m guessing they will go for it.

Health Benefits of Strawberries.

  • They increase good cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and guard against cancer.
  • Strawberries are rich in antioxidants
  • They are an excellent source of vitamin c and maganese. In fact, one serving (8 strawberries) provide more vitamin C than an orange!
  • Packed with vitamin B9 (folate), which is essential to normal tissue growth and cell function.

Strawberry Roti (Flavoured Flatbread)

Description

Sweet or a little tart depending on your berry crop, strawberry rotis (strawberry flatbread) are a favourite with kids!

Ingredients

Scale

1/2 cup of strawberry puree
1 cup durum flour (or your preferred roti flour)
Extra flour for dusting
Butter for topping rotis (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the flour into a wide bowl or atta parat. Slowly add in strawberry puree, and start bringing the dough together. Continue adding puree and combining flour until a dough ball is formed. Knead for 2-3 minutes, grease the dough with a touch of oil, and cover with a wet paper towel.
  2. Divide the dough into 6-8 portions depending on how big/thick you prefer your rotis. I make really tiny rotis and usually get 8 out of a cup of flour.
  3. Roll the portions into tight balls – or a peda. Lightly flatten the balls by pushing in the centre, creating a disk shape.
  4. Now pinch the edges of the disk with two fingers to expand the disk. (see the attached video)
  5. Roll out into a circular roti shape.
  6. Cook on a tava or in a fry pan heated to medium high. Cook for 9o seconds on the first side, then flip and cook for another 60-90 seconds on the second side. Puff over flame or wire rack.
  7. Remove the puffed roti onto a plate and coat with butter.
